Deutsche Bahn operates high-speed ICE trains that connect Cologne with major cities across Germany. The journey from Berlin to Cologne takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, while the trip from Munich typically takes around 4 hours.
By Flying
For those seeking a quicker journey, flying to Cologne is an option. Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) serves as the region’s primary airport, offering domestic and international flights. From Berlin and Munich, several airlines operate direct flights to Cologne, with flight durations ranging from around 1 to 1.5 hours.
By Bus
Traveling by bus is another budget-friendly option, with companies like FlixBus offering affordable and convenient service between major cities. The bus journey from Berlin to Cologne takes approximately 8 to 9 hours, while the trip from Munich typically takes around 7 to 8 hours, providing a cost-effective alternative for travelers seeking flexibility in their schedules.

If you can, I highly recommend overnighting your visit to truly have a full day in Cologne. Cologne offers a range of accommodations to suit every budget and preference.

However, if you prefer to cover more ground, consider the city’s hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus to visit top attractions conveniently.
What to See in Cologne in One Day
Here are the best things to do in Cologne, Germany with only a day to spare!
1. Visit the famous Cologne Cathedral
If there’s one thing you can’t miss when visiting Cologne, it’s the cathedral. This stunning example of architecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and sees about 6 million visitors every year, making it Germany’s most visited landmark!
While there, be sure to climb to the top for panoramic views of the city. Unfortunately the 320-foot tall tower does not have an elevator, and does require you to climb 533 steps.
Depending on your travel style, you’ll need about 1-2 hours to visit the Cologne Cathedral. You can buy a combo ticket to both the tower and the treasury for €10.
2. Wander the pretty Altstadt
As is the case for many of Germany’s most beautiful cities, I highly recommend getting lost in the cobblestone streets of Cologne’s Old Town. The historic city center features colorful buildings, charming cafes, and cute shops.

3. Walk across Cologne’s Hohenzollern Bridge
Suspended over the passing Rhine River, the Hohenzollern Bridge is one of Cologne’s most iconic landmarks. This railway bridge was originally constructed between 1907 and 1911 but was heavily bombed during World War II before its reconstruction.
Today, it features pedestrian walkways where you can take a peaceful stroll and admire great views of the river and Cologne skyline. Lovers come to the bridge and add locks with their initials and dates to symbolize their love.
4. Take a Rhine River cruise
With your one day in Cologne, I recommend embarking on a leisurely cruise along the Rhine River. These cruises offer a great way to take in the sights of the city’s skyline and waterfront landmarks while relaxing with a cold drink.
Depending on your tour, Rhine River cruises typically take about 1.5 hours.

5. Sample Kölsche Cuisine
Cologne is home to its own distinctive culinary and beer culture that you should definitely make a point to try while visiting! At the heart of Kölsch cuisine is the famous Kölsch beer, a crisp and refreshing brew that pairs perfectly with local dishes.
Some classic Kölsch dishes to consider trying include:
- Himmel un Ääd (Heaven and Earth): a savory combination of mashed potatoes, applesauce, and blood sausage.

Unpopular opinion: Skip Cologne’s Chocolate Museum
The Cologne Chocolate Museum is often touted as one of the best things to do in Cologne, and it absolutely can be. While it offers a fun way to learn about chocolate making with the added bonus of a small tasting, it is a bit overhyped for what it is and can be super crowded.
I only recommend it to those who are huge chocolate fans or families traveling with kiddos seeking a family-friendly thing to do.
There are other cooler things to do in Cologne, in my opinion, like visiting a former Gestapo office or riding the Cologne cable car, for example, which I share below!
